Cincinnati lost Michael W. Riley, 60, a long-time advocate of blues, rock, bluegrass, and music in general, suddenly in the early hours of Thursday, June 25. Michael was on the business side of the music industry, moving from Arc Distributing to retail - he was a behind-the-counter fixture for many years at Mole's Record Exchange and the Buzz in Clifton, and most recently was the bookkeeper at Sitwell's.
Behind his gruff exterior was a big, kind heart; he worked with many local artists to help their careers and was a common sight at area concerts in the '70s, working the pass gate for various promoters and venues like Bogart's. While in the record business he helped with promotion and and also handled ticket distribution for concerts - and CWC films - at the Buzz and Sitwell's. His partner and love-of-his-life, Tebbe, is planning a memorial music event - details will be posted when available. Michael, we'll miss you.
Volunteers create short films: CWC volunteers Hal Carlton-Ford and Bryan Lierer are both members of teams creating short films for the annual College Film Festival competition. Public screening of the various entries is tentatively scheduled for May 2 -- we'll have a film calendar listing once we confirm the date and venue.
CWC volunteer Vivian Kline has published a new novel, Let Freedom Sing: Of 19th Century Americans, an historical fiction about real people, many of whom lived in Cincinnati. Available directly from the author - viviankline at aol.com, and also at www.outskirtspress.com and amazon.com. More info here.
SAD NEWS... Feb 23: New Yorker Films announced it was closing after 44 years, as its parent company has defaulted on a loan for which the assets of New Yorker were used as security. The legendary international film distributor was a true icon of independent cinema, presenting an amazing array of films and their directors to American arthouse audiences - Almodovar, Bresson, Godard, Herzog, Makhmalbaf, Renais, Saura and Varda, to name a few.
In an interview twenty years ago, founder Dan Talbot described NYF's market, "This is an audience that generally knows at least one foreign language, has done a certain amount of traveling, is probably interested in wine and foreign cars and is fed up with all the junk that comes out of the West Coast."
RIP New Yorker, one of the few film companies that stressed intellectural curiosity and cinematic integrity in an era when the big studios promulgate an ever-declining lowest common denominator approach to mass-market movies. We hope some philanthropic-minded entity will purchase the extensive film library and keep it intact. Read the articles at Salon and
IndieWire.
